Struktur pada compound complex sentence membutuhkan kalimat utuh dimana terdapat 3 kejadian yang masing-masing memuat 1 subject (pelaku kalimat), 1 verb (kata kerja) serta 1 atau lebih kalimat tambahan. Sebelum melihat contoh kalimat compound complex sentence, ada baiknya kita kenali dua jenis klausa yang terlibat di di dalamnya yaitu independent dan dependent. Dua bentuk klausa ini nantinya akan dikombinasikan menjadi sebuah kalimat baru.

Independent clause adalah klausa yang memberikan suatu ide utuh, atau dengan kata lain berperan sebagai kalimat lengkap. Maka dari itu tidak masalah jika independent clause tak memiliki tambahan kalimat lain karena informasi yang disampaikan sudah bermakna dan jelas:

* Contoh Independent Clause: I kissed my mom 

• Subject: I
• Verb: kissed
• Object: my mom

Sedangkan dependent clause yaitu gabungan kata yang terdiri dari subject (pelaku) dan verb (kata kerja) namun informasi yang diberikan tidak utuh. Biasanya klausa ini memiliki unsur conjunction (kata hubung) di depannya. Secara teori, klausa ini tidak bisa berdiri sendiri dan harus didampingi independent clause.

* Contoh Dependent Clause: …before she left.

• Conjunction (kata hubung): before
• Subject: she
• Verb: left

Lalu jika dua klausa di atas kita gabung untuk membentuk kalimat yang padu, maka kalimat ini dinamakan complex sentence (kalimat kompleks). kita kerap menjumpai complex sentence dalam komunikasi verbal maupun bahasa tertulis. Berikut hasil gabungan antara 2 klausa di atas:

Contoh kalimat compound complex sentence memiliki kemiripan seperti halnya complex sentence di atas hanya saja lebih panjang. Kamu juga perlu menambahkan conjunction (kata hubung) untuk menggabungkan kalimat pertama dengan kalimat selanjutnya.

Secara sederhana, complex sentence hanya memiliki satu independent clause yang dihubungkan dengan satu dependent clause yang bisa diawali conjunction atau relative pronoun (who, whom, which, that, whose where, when ). Namun pada kalimat compound complex sentence  bisa memiliki dua independent clause yang dihubungkan dengan satu dependent clause bahkan lebih. 

Conjunction yang terdapat dalam Compound Complex Sentence

Terdapat beberapa conjunction atau kata hubung  yang bisa kamu pakai untuk menyatukan dependent clause dengan independent clause antara lain: 

• Conjunction yang memperlihatkan kalimat kontradiksi: Although
• Conjunction untuk mengartikan identitas: who, where, when, that
• Conjunction yang mengacu pada kondisi, situasi atau syarat tertentu: if, unless
• Conjunction yang merujuk pada waktu: while, since, until, before, after
• Conjunction yang memberikan cause-effect (sebab-akibat): because in order to, therefore

Sementara itu conjunction lainnya dapat juga difungsikan untuk menghubungkan kedua independent clause berbeda:

• Conjunction untuk memberikan alternatif atau opsi: or
• Conjunction untuk menjelaskan maksud atau tujuan: so, for
• Conjunction untuk menunjukkan kontradiksi atau pertentangan: yet, but
• Conjunction untuk menyatakan informasi tambahan: and

4. Dave is a secretive person but he actually needs friend after you know him better. (Dave adalah orang yang tertutup tetapi sebetulnya ia membutuhkan teman setelah kamu mengenalnya lebih baik.)
